MEETING MY NEW SCHOOL AND MASTER TEACHER

Well, many new things have come about in the last week. Classes started, they seem a bit redundant of other courses i have taken at Cal Poly, however i do think that in terms of lesson plan building and little tips for classroom creativity and management that the courses will be helpful. I LOVE my teachers- they are all really unique and have very different yet comedic personalities. When we were given our official welcome from the staff at our elementary school, we found out that some of the student teachers were changed. One of those changes was my partner. I have already mentioned Kristy, she will be in my cohort, however she will not be my partner anymore. My partner is named Shannon. Luckily, i have already met and befriended Shannon and really enjoy being around her. So although I am sad to not have my old partner, I am excited about getting to know Shannon and working with her.
Today has been one of the most eventful days since i started down here in Southern California. I map quested my school and found that it said it was a twenty minute commute but discovered it is more of a 30-45 minute commute. The drive was pretty long since i did not know what to expect. As i drove up to the school i did notice much Vietnamese shops and restaurants, as well as the neighborhood surrounding the school had many houses containing gates and bars. As i walked up to the school however i did notice a garden, a playground, a colorful mural, overal it seemed really nice from the outside. The Staff inside the office were amazingly nice and made me feel very welcomed. Next, i went to my second grade class which is in a court of second grade classrooms and met my teacher. She was so friendly, loving, and welcoming, it made me really excited for student teaching. As she gave me a tour around the classroom and filled me in on some of the day to day stuff i found out that they do not have a lot of time to teach science or social studies, that they teach to the standards, that the school is 50% vietnamese and 50% latino, that our school offers special ed for all age levels, and even has a preschool on site. Some of these are good things and some are challenges. i am EXTREMELY excited to be working with a group of children from a completely different demographic and cultural background then i am used to working with. All in all it was a great day, i was surprised by what i found at my new elementary school and yet in the very best way it motivates me and truly gives me something to look forward to- I CANT WAIT UNITL SCHOOL STARTS!

I'm sad to hear they don't teach much in the way of the sciences and social studies.
